Every protein has a shape. That shape is a story.

In the Stewart Lab we read that story in BRCA1 — the tumor suppressor whose structure helps decide who is at risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Why it matters

Genetic testing can find inherited changes in the BRCA1 gene — but for thousands of those changes, no one yet knows whether they are dangerous or harmless. A patient can receive a result that, in effect, says we don't know. We work to change that answer.

Turning “unknown” into understood — one protein at a time.
